Chicken and Sausage Paella Recipe

This chicken and sausage paella is a great dish.  My mother taught me how to make this.

Chicken & Sausage Paella

It is a little more time intensive than my usual weeknight dinners, but it certainly takes less time than cooking three of my usual dinners! This recipe makes enough for three dinners for my husband and me.  I like to make this paella Sunday evening and then have the leftovers for dinner on Monday and Tuesday. I even think that it tastes better after the first day!

You don’t need a special paella pan to make this.  I don’t have one.  I just used a large skillet with a lid. Continue reading

Winter Pinterest Challenge: DIY Paper Tulips

This last week I was surfing craft blogs when I saw a tutorial for gorgeous paper tulips.  I added the tulips to my ever expanding list of projects I would like to make.  I am inspired by so many of the beautiful projects I see online, but recently have not had time to craft.  The winter Pinterest challenge hosted by Sherry of Young House Love gave me the motivation I needed to take a hour to craft.

DIY Paper Tulips

While I haven’t seen any tulips yet this year, tulips are one of my favorite flowers because they are one of the first flowers of spring.  Here is a photo that I took last spring when I visited the Tulip Library on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Aren’t the tulips cheerful?

Finding Beauty

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to be more conscious of the beauty in the world around me.  While this may not seem related to either cooking or crafting, I see this resolution as being related to both of these pursuits. I craft and cook to create beauty and I see beauty as “the promise of happiness.”  Stendal,De L’Amour (1822).  I cook and craft to show others how much I care about them and to create the backdrop for what I hope will be happy memories, whether these memories are of celebrating Thanksgiving or Christmas with family, a friend’s pregnancy, or a home cooked meal. I also think that this is part of the allure of others’ beautiful foods, crafts, and design and why I enjoy sites like Craftgawker and Pinterest so much.

Since one of my resolutions is to try to notice beauty more, occasionally I plan to share pictures of pretty things I see like the winter flowers I posted last week or this bird that Jaime and I saw on a river walk this weekend. Surprisingly, the bird did not fly away when I approached to take this picture! (Granted, there was a few feet of water and a large drop off between me and the bird.)

Bird on RockI hope that everyone had a fabulous weekend! I’ll be sharing at least one (hopefully two) recipes later this week and I hope that you’ll stop by to see what I have been cooking. In the meantime, I’d love it if you’d share why you cook or craft in the comments.

Winter Flowers

It was such a lovely surprise to find this bush in full bloom outside our door in the middle of January.  I’m adding having flowers in the yard in January to my list of things I love about living in the South.

A Winter Flower

Anyone know what type of flower this is? Hope the New Year is off to a lovely start for everyone!

New Year’s Resolutions

Happy new year to all!

Did you make any resolutions for the new year? I love making resolutions at the start of the new year when almost anything seems possible.  I see it as a way to take stock of where I am and where I would like to be.  One of my goals for the new year is to grow this blog.  If you are a fellow blogger who has advice you’d be willing to share on this front, I would love it if you would email me or share in the comments. Thanks in advance!
