These cheddar-chive biscuits are quickly becoming a favorite recipe in our house. They are everything a good biscuit should be: fluffy, buttery, and flaky. The secret to their goodness? Buttermilk, cold butter, and lots of layers.

I’ll be honest. I’ve always been a bit intimated by fondant. The results are so gorgeous that I’ve always assumed that it was difficult. When I came across a fondant cupcake decorating class at a local shop called the Cake Professor, however, I decided to try working with fondant. Guess what? It turns out simple fondant decorations that can make a cupcake look really pretty are super simple to make. In a lot of ways working with fondant is a lot like playing with play-dough.
Last summer I shared a DIY chalkboard that I created from a thrift store frame and piece of hardboard. I liked that project, but the chalkboard was a bit small for the wall I wanted it for so I’ve been on the lookout for a larger frame. I found the perfect frame at a thrift store: It was the size I was looking for, inexpensive, and didn’t even need painting!
A couple of years ago I decided to bake the Peninsula Grill Coconut Cake, after finding a recipe for the cake on the Martha Stewart website. The cake was very time intensive to make. Also, after seeing everything that went into the cake it lost just a bit of its charm. Now, I don’t expect my cakes to be healthy, after all they are cakes, but the Peninsula Grill Coconut Cake is DECADENT even for a cake!
I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! My husband and I went to Washington, DC for a couple of days over the 4th of July weekend. I couldn’t imagine a better place to spend the 4th than in the nation’s capital!
I love vacationing in our former stomping grounds because I don’t feel any pressure to stuff our days with the must-sees of DC of which there are many. Instead we spent our days catching up with friends, revisiting some of our favorite places in the District, and exploring some new ones. Continue reading
I hope everyone is having a wonderful 4th of July! I always get a little homesick for Washington, DC around the 4th. Yes, it is usually hot and crowded and there is lots of extra security, but I love the patriotism that prevails. There is also something magical about sitting outside on a warm summer night alongside family, friends, and neighbors, faces all turned toward the sky, watching fireworks. During those times I feel very grounded in a community and connected to others, yet also very humbled and small.
I’m taking the day off to spend with my husband and friends, but will be back next week with a simple craft project and a delicious recipe.
How are you spending the 4th? Do you have any favorite Independence Day traditions? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
